III. Ways of quantitating nutrient requirements
Methods: Balance studies
- Method -- measure input and output; when they are equal, assume the body is saturated.
- Assumes that the size of the body pool of the nutrient is appropriate and is not changed by the experiment.
- Assumes that higher levels of intake would do no good (clearly not true of water -- hardly anyone would recommend just enough water to maintain balance).
