Conclusion: The oat bran story

In the beginning, oat bran lowered blood cholesterol.

Oat bran failed to lower blood cholesterol in carefully controlled studies, receiving great play in the news.

Then it came out that the careful studies studied young men with normal blood cholesterol.

Later studies showed that if the blood cholesterol is abnormally high, oat bran (and other soluble fiber) does help.
