Case Of the Week

Case 8

The term placenta shown here is normal in size, but on the fetal surface can be seen a mass lesion which is a chorangioma (chorioangioma, placental angioma). This is a benign neoplasm composed of small vascular channels--essentially a form of hemangioma. The neoplasm's gross appearance can be variable, with a tan to yellow to white to red to brown appearance depending upon vascularity, fibrosis, and hemosiderin deposition. Most chorangiomas are small and of no clinical significance, but larger tumors can interfere with placental function, potentially causing stillbirth.
