This is erythema nodosum, a form of panniculitis that mainly affects adipose tissue beneath the skin. The lower legs are most often involved. The markedly tender, erythematous nodules are sometimes more easily palpable than seen. The lesions tend to flatten and fade over several weeks, leaving no scar. An underlying cause should be suggested by the appearance of erythema nodosum, for in over half of cases it is due to an infection (such as a granulomatous disease like tuberculosis), sarcoidosis, a drug reaction, inflammatory bowel disease, or a neoplasm. However, in some cases it is idiopathic.
