Seen here is a small circumscribed neoplasm that is occluding a bronchus. Radiographically, the bronchial obstruction has resulted in atelectasis. Microscopically, the neoplasm is composed of small, uniform blue cells. This is a bronchial carcinoid tumor. Bronchial carcinoids comprise about 1% of lung neoplasms. Most patients are under the age of 40. There is no relationship to smoking. These tumors may produce cough and hemoptysis. The bronchial obstruction can lead to pneumonia and bronchiectasis. Though they may invade locally, most bronchial carcinoids have a good prognosis.
