This discreet mass in the region of the sella turcica at the base of the brain is a pituitary adenoma. These adenomas arise in the anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis). They may function and produce hormones such as prolactin or growth hormone to produce an endocrine effect. Some may not function, but their size results in symptoms (such as bilateral hemianopsia) through compression of surrounding structures, such as the optic chiasm located superiorly.
