For the new millenium, here is a disease process that has plagued man for millenia, but only recently in human history has it been effectively treatable. The first head CT scan in axial view above demonstrates anodontogenic abscess involving the first molar of the left mandible. In the next view, this abscess is seen extending into soft tissues below the mandible with overlying soft tissue swelling. The microscopic view demonstrates numerous acute inflammatory cells in the center of this process. Poor dentition with caries that extend to the tooth root, or periapical inflammation that extends to involve deep structures, may be implicated. Aside from the severe pain, patients can become septic.
