Case 83 | |
The placenta shown here shows scattered grape-like villi along with normal-appearing spongy red placental tissue, consistent with changes of a partial hydatidiform mole, which occurs with triploidy. The karyotype can be 69, XXY or 69, XXX or 69, XYY. Unlike a complete hydatidiform mole in which all the villi appear grape-like and no fetus is present (because only paternal chromosomes are present), the partial mole is accompanied by a malformed fetus. A triploid fetus rarely goes to term. Unlike the complete mole, choriocarcinoma is rare with a partial mole. | |
