Case 93

This postmortem radiograph of the heart reveals the presence of a stent in the right coronary artery following an angioplasty procedure performed two years prior to death. Angioplasty can be effective in restoring coronary blood flow by treating focal narrowing. However, there is a tendency for atheromatous plaques to remodel and for re-occlusion to occur at the site(s) of angioplasty. The stent helps to keep the coronary lumen open and delay restenosis. The rate of complications from stents is minimal.
