Case 94 | |
The prostate gland shown here in axial (transverse) section is large (normal is 3 to 4 cm) and demonstrates nodular hyperplasia. This is a common condition in older males. There is a proliferation of both the glandular and stromal elements. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) plays a role in the development of prostatic hyperplasia. Testosterone is converted to DHT by the action of 5-alpha-reductase. Inhibitors of this enzyme may aid in reducing the symptoms of urinary tract obstruction caused by the hyperplasia. Prostatic hyperplasia does not appear to be a precursor to prostate carcinoma, though both seen in older males. | |
