As the placenta matures and increases in size in the second trimester, the villi become smaller and more vascular. The syncytiotrophoblast cell layer draws up into "syncytial knots" which are small clusters of cells, leaving a single cytotrophoblast layer. Clumps of pink fibrin begin to appear between the chorionic villi.
