The instruction session was videotaped for use with current and future staff not in attendance. Meanwhile on the lower level, new track has been installed in the floor for the compact shelving system. It can be fun walking through the library and seeing things being moved from place to place. It makes one appreciate the immensity of the task — past, present and future.

The ceiling tile is in place in a number of areas, and I also observed one of the workers using a pair of stilts to do work up high. I wonder if the same type of stilts were used to make the actor playing Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies taller…?

Workers are hanging the new drop-ceiling along with updated light fixtures. They are also cutting holes in the roof and installing “solatubes,” which are designed to let outside light into the building and save energy costs. Take a look!

The contractors came to inspect and plan, and Hang was there supervising the installation of new fiber optic cable for the network. And our intrepid Sophia is captured attempting to navigate a snow-covered, wooden sidewalk with a full book cart.

On top of all this, an underground steam pipe ruptured right between the Library and the adjacent HSEB where we relocated to. The big hole and construction equipment has forced many to take new routes between buildings.

Eccles Health Sciences Library building has now closed to allow the Ceiling Project to move forward. We, the library staff, are still here to serve our patrons needs. Our Public Services department (the first folks you see when you walked in the front door) has moved to the Health Sciences Education Building, room 2080. The  room contains a selection of open- and closed-reserve books, a copier, several computer workstations with color and black-and-white printing, and tables for group work. To request other books, journals and materials simply email the Reference desk or call. The bulk of the collection is in the basement of the library building and only accessible by library personnel. We will retrieve your materials as quickly as staffing levels and patron demand allow.

Eccles Health Sciences Library remains open until December 19th but is now a closed stacks library for the next six to seven months – until we re-open in June 2010. Library staff will pull requested items but our collections are no longer open to the public.

All items are in our Library Catalog (Only books and government documents have call numbers. We shelve journals by title.)

Eccles Health Sciences Library has been selected by the Asbestos Protocol program at the University of Utah for removal of asbestos containing materials. The ceiling tiles on all three levels of the library are slated for removal later this Fall 2009. In addition to the removal and replacement of the ceiling and updating the fire sprinkler system, upgrades to the electrical, lighting and networking systems will also be performed.

The six to eight month project will be expedited in phases and will require the library building be closed to the public for most of the project. Library services and staff will continue to be available. Library staff will re-locate to space within the Health Sciences Center such as the Health Sciences Education Building and the School of Medicine. Phone, online and virtual services will continue uninterrupted. The physical collections of journals, books and documents will be available through a delivery service. Library staff will retrieve journals and books for users.

Timeline:

  • September 28, 2009:
    Begin moving library shelving and furniture. Extra shelving set up on lower level. Please pardon the noise.
  • October 8, 2009:
    Lower level closed to public access. Begin moving main level collections to lower level.
  • November 7, 2009:
    Lower level, north end abatement and construction.
  • December 30, 2009:
    Library closed.
  • July 1, 2010:
    Library re-opens.
