Library building re-opens

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Our library building officially re-opened to the public on Monday, August 23, 2010. Many thanks to all who worked so hard to get it ready so quickly — Public Services, Tech Support, etc. Tables and chairs have been arranged to restrict access to the stacks due to earthquake safety regulation while on the lower level construction of the compact shelving continues apace.

Winners and suggestions

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Recently the Eccles Health Sciences Library conducted a survey via email of its student-patrons from the University of Utah’s Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Health. We received over 220 responses which provided valuable insights into how our services are perceived and utilized, as well as how we can improve. To encourage participation we offered survey respondents the opportunity to be entered into a prize drawing for one of five $25 gift certificates to the University Bookstore. Five winning names were drawn and the recipients have now all claimed their prizes. Congratulations to Justin N, Sarah B, Cassidy D, Carlos B. and Heidi B!

Our survey offered respondents the opportunity to offer suggestions and comments. Below are many of them along with a response from library staff:

  • Please provide more subscriptions to access full text articles online.
Better access to journals and help in research.
Together with Marriott and Quinney libraries, we currently provides access to many of the top publications and databases, usually with links to full text. If you are unable to obtain the text you need we can get it for you via Interlibrary Loan, which is free to students. Also, if the system shows we provide access to a given article but you are unable to link to it, feel free to contact our staff via phone, email or Ask-a-Librarian, and we’ll be glad to assist you.
  • I would like to be able to renew books online instead of via phone/ in person.
You can renew your library materials online at any time.
  • “Improve wireless signal within the library.”
“I am devastated that the library is closed until summer. I feel homeless….”
“Can’t wait to have the library back”

We regret any inconvenience caused by the Ceiling Project, but the improvements will be worth the wait — faster wireless and wired connectivity, better lighting, removal of old asbestos tiles, and updated fire-suppression systems included. You can track the progress on our Ceiling Project blog.
  • Free PDA programs for med students.
EHSL currently licenses a number of PDA applications for use by students and U of Utah affiliates. Check out our list of applications on our website for more information.
  • Offer workshops on EndNote, PubMed searches, Getting Published, Ranking Journals, Databases, CINAHL, Excel, etc.
We currently offer many of these topics as workshops. Marriott Library also offers many helpful workshops to the University. If you are unable to attend one of our workshops, library staff are available for individual consultations, both at Eccles and at Marriott. Call or email us to schedule an appointment.
  • WebVPN has never worked for me, even after calls to the help desk. An easier interface would be great.
Consider using the University’s VPN client, a free, small software package that you download onto your personal computer and use to connect to library resources.

If you need help with something, or cannot find or successfully utilize the resources you want just ask. Our friendly, professional staff are here to help you.

The building may be closed but we’re still here for you!

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library building has now closed to allow the Ceiling Project to move forward. We, the library staff, are still here to serve our patrons’ needs. Our Public Services department (the first folks you see when you walked in the front door) has moved to the Health Sciences Education Building, room 2080. The room contains a selection of open- and closed-reserve books, a copier, several computer workstations with color and black-and-white printing, and tables for group work. To request other books, journals and materials simply email the Reference desk or call. The bulk of the collection is in the basement of the library building and only accessible by library personnel. We will retrieve your materials as quickly as staffing levels and patron demand allow.

Ceiling Project in the Library 2009 – 2010

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Under the auspices of fire safety, the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library has been selected by the Asbestos Protocol program at the University of Utah for removal of asbestos containing materials. The ceiling tiles on all three levels of the library are slated for removal later this Fall 2009. In addition to the removal and replacement of the ceiling and updating the fire sprinkler system, upgrades to the electrical, lighting and networking systems will also be performed.

The six to eight month project will be expedited in phases and will require the library building be closed to the public for most of the project. Library services and staff will continue to be available. Library staff will re-locate to space within the Health Sciences Center such as the Health Sciences Education Building and the School of Medicine. Phone, online and virtual services will continue uninterrupted. The physical collections of journals, books and documents will be available through a delivery service. Library staff will retrieve journals and books for users.
