The Wednesday, April 10 Library and Information Technology Forum features Tony Sams who will present The U & You: An Asynchronous Human Library, a session focused on a project collecting student stories. Please join us in the Eccles Health Sciences Education Building, Room 5100 B at 12:05 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The U & You project seeks to build a longitudinal collection of students’ academic and social growth. The project consists of two parts:
1. Interviews with students that are transcribed and assigned metadata for relevant recall.
2. Development of a website to access the stories, by searching for metadata on the participant

The U & You project is producing original documents (interviews) in the form of local oral histories and experimenting with an entirely new “collection” that is social in origin, and special in the access it provides to the personal experiences of the U’s student population.

Tony Sams is the Digital Scholarship Consultant and Project Manager, Digital Scholarship Lab in the Faculty Center at the J. Willard Marriott Library.

Join us in the Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building, Room 5100 B at 12:05-1:00 p.m. for this program.

For more details, visit the LIFT Forum page. Program can be viewed from off-site via link from the web page; and available on demand after the program.

The Wednesday, November 7 Library and Information Technology Forum features Mark Beekhuizen and Aaron Dewald talking about “Technology and Learning Science in Simulation.” Please join us in the Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building, Room 2600 at 12:05-1:00 p.m. for this program.

Program Description: Have you ever wondered how world leaders know how to react in times of crisis? In fact, where do world leaders learn how to handle these difficult situations? Fortunately, the University of Utah College of Law trains tomorrow’s leaders for these contingencies.

Each year, the S.J. Quinney College of Law runs a day long counter-terrorism simulation that puts students in a real life crisis scenario. Through this interesting use of technology, students learn the skills necessary to act and react appropriately in crisis situations.

Presenters will talk about:

How we put together the simulation in conjunction with the Simulation Design Course taught at the College of Law

How to leverage technology to make a smooth, realistic scenario

What unfolds over the course of the twelve hour day

For more information and a short documentary about previous simulations, visit http://simulation.law.utah.edu

Presenters:
She is an inspiration to us all and gives new definition to the phrase “active aging.” See more at her website, and join us Monday, Feb. 27th, noon to 1:00 pm in HSEB 2120.

Dr. Masheter continued to climb in her 60s, first Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America, followed by Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. On May 24, 2008, at age 61 years 7 1/2 months, she became the second oldest woman in the world to summit Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world. If Dr. Masheter summits the Carstensz Pyramid, a steep fin of limestone that rises out of equatorial jungle to over 16,000 feet in elevation next month, she will become the oldest woman in the world to summit the Seven Summits, the highest peak on each continent. Dr. Masheter now enjoys sharing lessons learned from her mountaineering experiences with others. At age 65, she also continues to climb.

“Science is changing and changing fast. Concepts like the data life cycle, data curation, translational science, high performance computing, and data sharing are having an impact on how science is conducted. At the same time, libraries are adjusting services to meet the needs of highly networked and technically savvy patron groups. eScience is a term that describes the dynamic re-shaping of collaboration and workflows in science and creating unique and important opportunities for librarianship. This presentation explores potential roles for librarians in eScience, how new collaborations might form, and the role of the libraries in the data life cycle.”

Mayden Lecture on the topic “From Usability to User Experience.” Designing websites, she explains, should focus not on what the software does, but on what the user does with it. Important design questions to ask include:

How easy is this site to learn?

How efficiently can end users complete their desired tasks?

How easy will it be to come back to this site again later and remember how to use it?

How quickly can the user and site together recover from errors?

If we can understand how the user experiences our site, we can design it to better meet their needs.

Etches-Johnson pointed out that at the core, an academic library website is a research tool, and she advocates that it should focus on frequently asked questions or sought-for types of resources. She also reviewed how one writes for the web; rather than pages loaded with lots of words, they:

should be written in an active voice,

can use short sentences or fragments, and

are only as strong as the weakest feature.

QR codes are two dimensional codes that can be scanned with a mobile device’s camera and a reader application to link to various resources such as a URL, application, or video. This presentation will introduce QR codes and explore how they can allow libraries to connect faculty, students and visitors to the information they want at the point of need. The libraries on campus are currently using them to link to Web sites, access digital learning objects, promote classes, and guide users to specific library locations. Come learn about the next generation bar codes and see how they can be useful to you!
