Age of Champions tells the story of five competitors who sprint, leap, and swim for gold at
the National Senior Olympics. You’ll meet a 100-year-old tennis champion, 86-year-old pole
vaulter, and hard-hitting grandmothers who triumph over the limitations of age.

The filmmakers have partnered with organizations including the National Institute on Aging,
Osher Center, and President’s Council on Fitness to share the entire documentary for free
during the film’s national online premiere, April 18 – 28, 2013.

The Washington Post called the film “infectiously inspiring” and theater audiences across
the country have fallen in love with its light-hearted take on growing older.

Invite your family, friends, and colleagues to watch the film for free by forwarding this
email, posting on Twitter, and sharing the link on Facebook.

This is Google’s “Knowledge Graph.” I say “may offer” because a search on Edinburgh, UK, results in a knowledge graph (KG) that looks like a Wikpedia entry, with information on population, area, weather, a map and links to four well-known “Points of interest.” Yet the same search on “automobile” or “librarian” did not generate any “See results about” content. Google is not yet clear what information about these things you want. Add an adjective or additional descriptive term, such as “antique,” and you get a side box on “Antique Automobile Club.”

Here is Google’s video describing this new service:

While Google does not share its trade secrets, the ReadWriteWeb blog reports that, in part, this system relies on Freebase, “a structured database of semantic information. It maps synonyms to help Google understand the meaning of words.” It also incorporates content from Wikipedia, Google Books and the World CIA Factbook [1], which means it is seeking to be more authoritative. This has implications for online content providers. As the EverSparkInteractive blog notes:

Because Google is providing this information to users, you can bet your bottom dollar the search engine will expect the sites it top ranks to provide information like this. So, when you are writing content for your website, remember to include verifiable facts. [2]

While libraries specialize in providing authoritative content via free and subscription databases and other resources, will Google’s new approach recognize this and increase their visibility? Librarians wear many hats, and it can be quite easy to slap up web content without proper metadata, let alone add important links “above the fold.” The structure and organization of information on a library’s website — its information architecture — may or may not be carefully planned and executed. How will this affect its ranking by Google now?

Have you used the new KG? Have you found it helpful? Tell us!

Do click on the link to the Mauger: A Father and Son Dabbling in Landscape article to see a collage of pictures of notable folks who attended the Friday afternoon reception. It was a lot of fun and instructive.

This issue includes the results of our eReader and Tablets user preference survey. Not surprisingly – the iPad was the favorite tablet and the Kindle was the favorite eReader. Click the table of contents link to learn more.

The table of contents also links to various announcements about library services (like JoVE), professional activities (NANOS, AAMC WRC, personnel transitions, library faculty output), and upcoming events and celebrations (InfoFair 2012, National Library of Medicine Changing the Face of Medicine exhibit, Library Grand Re-opening, etc.)

It is a big issue, filled with lots of information. Please enjoy the read!

As a regular reader of the iMedicalApps blog, I was excited by the title of a recent posting: “If you don’t have an iPad, go to the medical library and borrow one.” The post goes on to highlight three U.S. schools that check out iPads to physicians: Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and University of Central Florida (UCF), and one in the Netherlands, University Medical Center Groningen. The latter institution’s program was so successful that they added five more iPads to their initial fleet of three, and are documenting everything on their wiki site.

What uses are these devices being put to?

Amanda Chiplock MLS, the Acquisitions Emerging Technologies Librarian at the Nova Southeastern University Health Professions Division Library reported that most of the physicians who borrow their iPads are using them for teaching and presentations (45%) or videos and research (40%) [from iMedicalApps post].

Doctors and other patrons who check out these devices can install their own software selections, and retain access to those apps for use via their account at the iTunes Store, should they decide to purchase an iPad for themselves. Challenges arise when using these devices to access institutional electronic medical records (EMR), but they are not insurmoutable. Upon return to the library, these devices are easily wiped and reset back to their basic configuration for the next patron.

As noted in an earlier post, the Eccles Health Sciences Library also has a mobile device check-out program, providing patrons the option of test-driving any of the following eReaders and tablets before purchasing one for themselves:

Apple’s iPad (3 available)

Motorola Xoom (3 available)

Amazon Kindle (6 available)

Barnes and Noble Nook (3 “1st Edition” and 3 color)

The check-out period is two weeks (as of this writing), and upon check-in, patrons are asked to complete a brief survey on how the device was used, etc.

Have you checked out an iPad, eReader or other mobile computing device from Eccles Library or another library? What device did you check out, and how did you use it? What did you like and dislike about it? Tell us!

As an example of how this process is implemented, I recently received a request to link to the following site via an email sent to our Director:

Our site (http://www.bestnursingdegree.com/) is listed as a web resource by the American Nurses Association and the American Hospital Association, and the New York Times highlighted us in November 2010 as a nursing career/education resource. I’m biased : ) but I do think it might be a useful addition.

A visit to this URL leads to a site that claims to have widespread approval by “organizations such as the American Nurses Association, the American Hospital Association, the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, and the National Gerontological Nursing Association, among many others.” They also claim to have “given back to the nursing community by sponsoring over $12,000 in nursing student scholarships over the past two years.” It even claims to be a member of the American Library Association (ALA). The site is clearly organized and packed with useful information.

When compared to the HON Code Principles, however, this site falls short on several criteria. First, it barely meets the requirement for “Transparency,” only providing an email address as contact information, and nothing else. A visit to the parent company’s website, Degree Prospects LLC, leads to a single web page with little information other than a generic email address, falling short in the “Authoritative” and “Financial Disclosure” categories. Finally, its so-called “Privacy Policy” can be changed at any time, and they reserve the right to sell assets, including any personal information provided by visitors. They claim that if personal information is sold, the Privacy Policy “shall remain in full force and effect and shall be binding” on those it is sold to. But any policy can be changed at any time by either the seller or the buyer, so privacy is fluid at best.

Should the library include a link to this site as a resource on our website, or not? What do you think? Tell us!

In response to the high demand for extended library hours during the week before finals, ASUU and the J. Willard Marriott Library have collaborated to accommodate the needs of students. Beginning at noon on Sunday, December 4th, the J. Willard Marriott Library will be open non-stop until 2:00 am on Friday, December 9th. The library will then re-open at 7:00 am Friday, December 9th for regular library hours.

In addition to extending library hours, ASUU has partnered with the University Campus Store to distribute a limited supply of free bluebooks, pencils, highlighters, index cards, food, and parking validation stickers from Commuter Services. Beginning on December 5th through the 9th starting at 6:00 pm until midnight, look for the ASUU tables just outside of the Gould Auditorium on the first floor of the Marriott Library.

Successful outreach and promotion of library resources and services involves forming partnerships with other departments and organizations, as well as using social media and the latest Web 2.0 tools to educate and inform new and underserved patron groups.

In academic libraries, one of the ongoing challenges faced by librarians and staff is making patrons aware of the services we offer. This is especially important because we get new patrons every year: new students, faculty, etc. How do we keep up?

Traditionally, libraries have offered tours to incoming groups, where new students and faculty hear about services offered, and take home a handful of printed materials listing everything their library can do to help them in their work. Unfortunately, most of this information is never looked at, and ends up in a “circular file” (i.e. the trash).

Since the invention and proliferation of social media — blogs, Facebook, Twitter, wikis, Second Life etc. — libraries have new venues for outreach and promotion. One software-as-service online tool that might be considered here is the ability to create short animations on any subject, such as “What is interlibrary loan?”
GoAnimate.com: Interlibrary Loan 1 by Firesidelibrarian

In addition, special events of all kinds are used to attract “diverse diverse, underserved and expanded user populations” (Fabian, 2003) to library events and resources. At the University of Buffalo, Arts and Humanities librarians formed partnerships with cultural institutions and academic departments to reach out to new audiences in new ways: teaching assistant workshops, multi-media kiosks, book talks and library exhibits.

In each of the four outreach activities, the Team found that the efforts of partnership produced more effective and successful results. For the library exhibits, partnerships with area cultural institutions and academic departments helped to ensure not only stimulating content, but an expanded market for our offerings. Additionally, librarians found that embracing technology solutions for their exhibit space limitations not only engaged unexpected users, but also opened up new opportunities for applying emerging technologies to more traditional library services, for example, library instruction.

Eccles library faculty are looking at ways to use similar events to draw in patron groups. Watch for more information in coming weeks. And if you have an idea to share, tell us about it!
