The University of Utah Libraries have embraced QR (‘quick response’) codes as a means of delivering additional information to patrons via their mobile device. QR codes are two dimensional codes that can be scanned with a mobile device’s camera and a reader application to link to various resources such as a URL, application, or video. This presentation will introduce QR codes and explore how they can allow libraries to connect faculty, students and visitors to the information they want at the point of need. The libraries on campus are currently using them to link to Web sites, access digital learning objects, promote classes, and guide users to specific library locations. Participants will learn how to use and create their own QR Codes in class. Come learn about the next generation bar codes and see how they can be useful to you!

On the third Tuesday of each month, our library offers staff development presentations on a wide range of topics — health, technology, etc. Today we enjoyed a presentation on library ethics by Dr. Jean Preer, who recently published a book on this topic. Her presentation from Indianapolis, IN, was communicated via a polycom audio and video connection in one of the fully equipped classrooms in HSEB, and was recorded and archived so staff who were unable to attend could view it at a later time.

Dr. Preer began her talk by talking about the history of library ethics, and pointed out that libraries did not develop a code of ethics until the early 1900′s. Next she outlined four core aspects of current codes of ethics written by the American Library Association, the Medical Library Association, and the American Association of Law Libraries. All of these codes, and many others like them, share commitments to:

Provide the highest level of service.

Provide access to diverse points of view.

Avoid conflicts of interest, both philosophical and financial

Protect patron confidentiality.

After some interesting discussion, Dr. Preer went on to outline six principles of ethical practice in libraries:

Abide by ethical values and practice

Provide consistent service

Provide identity-free services.

Apply rules in a content-neutral way.

Distinguish between personal beliefs and professional responsibilities.

Make principles exceptions.

Discussions both during and after the presentation showed significant staff engagement with the topic, and the presentation was timely and highly relevant to our work.

Jean Preer is a professor in the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science-Indianapolis. A graduate of Swarthmore College, she earned her MLS degree at the University of California-Berkeley and a J.D. and a Ph.D. in American Civilization at George Washington University. Before joining the Indiana University faculty in 2002, she taught at the library school of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where she also served as Associate Dean. In 2006 she received the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) Award for Teaching Excellence. In 2007, her essay, “Promoting Citizenship: Librarians Help Get Out the Vote in the 1952 Presidential Election,” won the Justin Winsor Prize awarded by the Library History Round Table of the American Library Association. She is the author of Library Ethics, published by Libraries Unlimited in 2008 and honored as the 2009 winner of the Greenwood Publishing Group Award for Best Book in Library Literature.

At the EHSL monthly “Topic du Jour” presentation today Kathleen Amos, our NLM Fellow, led a discussion about “Retraction of Biomedical Literature as Indexed in MEDLINE.” Here is a brief summary of her interesting presentation’s content:

“Over the past few years, the retraction of biomedical literature indexed in MEDLINE has been increasing. An exploratory study was conducted to characterize these retractions in terms of such elements as initiating factor, retracting body, and reason for retraction, and to identify potential trends in retraction over time. The results of this study will be presented. Findings focus on the retraction of standard published papers, but ahead-of-print publications will be addressed briefly as well.”

Next month’s presentation will be on “information architecture” and why it’s important to library website design.

Recently the Eccles Health Sciences Library conducted a survey via email of its student-patrons from the University of Utah’s Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Health. We received over 220 responses which provided valuable insights into how our services are perceived and utilized, as well as how we can improve. To encourage participation we offered survey respondents the opportunity to be entered into a prize drawing for one of five $25 gift certificates to the University Bookstore. Five winning names were drawn and the recipients have now all claimed their prizes. Congratulations to Justin N, Sarah B, Cassidy D, Carlos B. and Heidi B!

Our survey offered respondents the opportunity to offer suggestions and comments. Below are many of them along with a response from library staff:

Please provide more subscriptions to access full text articles online.
Better access to journals and help in research.
Together with Marriott and Quinney libraries, we currently provides access to many of the top publications and databases, usually with links to full text. If you are unable to obtain the text you need we can get it for you via Interlibrary Loan, which is free to students. Also, if the system shows we provide access to a given article but you are unable to link to it, feel free to contact our staff via phone, email or Ask-a-Librarian, and we’ll be glad to assist you.

I would like to be able to renew books online instead of via phone/ in person.
You can renew your library materials online at any time.

“Improve wireless signal within the library.”
“I am devastated that the library is closed until summer. I feel homeless….”
“Can’t wait to have the library back”
We regret any inconvenience caused by the Ceiling Project, but the improvements will be worth the wait — faster wireless and wired connectivity, better lighting, removal of old asbestos tiles, and updated fire-suppression systems included. You can track the progress on our Ceiling Project blog.

Free PDA programs for med students.
EHSL currently licenses a number of PDA applications for use by students and U of Utah affiliates. Check out our list of applications on our website for more information.

Offer workshops on EndNote, PubMed searches, Getting Published, Ranking Journals, Databases, CINAHL, Excel, etc.
We currently offer many of these topics as workshops. Marriott Library also offers many helpful workshops to the University. If you are unable to attend one of our workshops, library staff are available for individual consultations, both at Eccles and at Marriott. Call or email us to schedule an appointment.

WebVPN has never worked for me, even after calls to the help desk. An easier interface would be great.
Consider using the University’s VPN client, a free, small software package that you download onto your personal computer and use to connect to library resources.

If you need help with something, or cannot find or successfully utilize the resources you want just ask. Our friendly, professional staff are here to help you.
