As you may have heard, Google Reader will be retired at the end of June.

Since Google Reader is a tool we at the Eccles Library have recommended using for RSS feeds in the past, we wanted to make sure you, our patrons, are aware of this and provide some options. Here are the four Google Reader alternatives that I have seen suggested the most:

Feedly – https://www.feedly.com/
NewsBlur – http://www.newsblur.com/
The Old Reader – http://theoldreader.com/
NetVibes – http://www.netvibes.com/

You can find overviews and comments about these and other RSS tools in posts on Gizmodo and The Verge. If none of those work for you, there are plenty of other options, including ones that make your RSS feed look like a Star Wars movie opening or a Star Trek computer display.

Basic information about retrieving your Google Reader data before July 1st can be found on the Google support page. For more information about how to transfer your data and feeds from Google Reader to your new reader, try this Lifehacker post.

Personally, I have been trying out Feedly for the last few weeks. This is one of the easier transitions because Feedly pulls your RSS subscriptions directly from your Google Reader account. I have found that after tweaking some of the preferences, I feel pretty comfortable using it and am no longer quite so devastated about losing Google Reader. I have tried the Chrome and Firefox plugins, as well as the iPhone and iPad apps. I think I even like the mobile apps a little better than using Google Reader on my iPhone.

Which RSS reader are you using?

the National Senior Olympics. You’ll meet a 100-year-old tennis champion, 86-year-old pole
during the film’s national online premiere, April 18 – 28, 2013.

The Wednesday, April 10 Library and Information Technology Forum features Tony Sams who will present The U & You: An Asynchronous Human Library, a session focused on a project collecting student stories. Please join us in the Eccles Health Sciences Education Building, Room 5100 B at 12:05 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The U & You project seeks to build a longitudinal collection of students’ academic and social growth. The project consists of two parts:
1. Interviews with students that are transcribed and assigned metadata for relevant recall.
2. Development of a website to access the stories, by searching for metadata on the participant

The U & You project is producing original documents (interviews) in the form of local oral histories and experimenting with an entirely new “collection” that is social in origin, and special in the access it provides to the personal experiences of the U’s student population.

Tony Sams is the Digital Scholarship Consultant and Project Manager, Digital Scholarship Lab in the Faculty Center at the J. Willard Marriott Library.

Join us in the Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building, Room 5100 B at 12:05-1:00 p.m. for this program.

April 11: The Updated NIH Public Access Policy
Presented by Abby Adamczyk
Do you have an NIH grant and need to find out if your publications meet the updated NIH Public Access Policy requirements? Learn how to check your compliance and make sure your papers are in PubMed Central.

April 18: Images: Where can you find them and what’s legal?
Presented by Nancy Lombardo
This brief overview will cover what is a legal use of images for teaching and presentations. Fair Use, Public Domain and Creative Commons issues will be discussed. Useful sites for finding images will be presented.

April 25: Finding and Re-Purposing Datasets
Presented by Peter Jones

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a collection of more than 17 million items and their new book, Hidden Treasure, showcases a collection of rare and surprising pieces found in the collection. Michael Sappol is the editor of this fascinating collection and a curator-historian at NLM.

Among the items featured in the collection are photographs of international nurse uniforms, dental cartoons, health and hygiene puzzle blocks from China, U.S. Army malaria pinup calendars, Adolf Hitler’s X-rays, and a volume on the art of palm reading. Each item highlighted in the book has been specially selected and is paired with a commentary from a scholar on the history and significance of the item. “Some things are charming and entertaining. Others are disturbing to look at, or document terrible things,” Sappol says. “There’s a lot in the book. In some cases it’s a document of human suffering, showing the diseases and afflictions people have. In other cases, it’s a document of ingenuity and coming up with treatments.”1

Hidden Treasure is available as a free download from NLM’s Digital Collections or, if you’d like a hardcopy to entertain your guests, you can purchase it through major online booksellers.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program is excited to introduce the TRI University Challenge!

Through this new initiative, EPA is challenging the academic community to find innovative and creative ways to use TRI data to promote more informed decision-making and action on the part of communities, manufacturers, and government. Project ideas may range from one semester to multi-year research or coursework as long as the projects increase the knowledge, use, and understanding of TRI data and other related information. Priority will be given to projects related to one or more of the following topics:

Pollution Prevention and Sustainability

Stakeholder Engagement

Technology and Data Mashups

Environmental Education

Institutions whose project proposals are selected will serve as TRI University Challenge partners. Partners will receive direct non-monetary support from EPA TRI staff experts, and, depending on the outcome of their project, may receive national recognition for their project as well as speaking opportunities at conferences and events. Applicants who are not prepared to submit project ideas this spring are encouraged to submit project proposals during the next open application period.

Sample project ideas and evaluation criteria are posted on the TRI University Challenge website: www.epa.gov/tri/university.

Informational Webinar

Join us for a webinar on March 6 at 2:00 p.m. EST to learn more about the Challenge and ask questions about getting involved. Register at: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/420376090.

ORCID is a free tool that allows you to gather together the outputs of your research under one unique identifier. It will give you the ability to make sure that the articles, data sets, etc. that you published are the ones attributed you, and are linked together.

“ORCID aims to solve the name ambiguity problem in research and scholarly communications by creating a central registry of unique identifiers for individual researchers and an open and transparent linking mechanism between ORCID and other current researcher ID schemes. These identifiers, and the relationships among them, can be linked to the researcher’s output to enhance the scientific discovery process and to improve the efficiency of research funding and collaboration within the research community.” http://about.orcid.org/about/what-is-orcid/mission

Currently, ORCID only supports published works, but in the future it will expand to include grant and patent information, as well as a list of institutional affiliations.

Visit the ORCID website for more information and to register for an ID.

“ Cases Database is a freely accessible and continuously updated tool, developed by BioMed Central, which allows clinicians, researchers, teachers and patients to explore thousands of peer-reviewed medical case reports from multiple journal publishers, including BioMed Central, Springer and BMJ Group.”

“Cases Database adds value to individual reports, allowing comparison of similar cases and helping to highlight trends and patterns which may help researchers to develop hypotheses which can then be tested by systematic research.
To aid discovery, all cases reports in Case Database are annotated using text-mining, which extracts clinically relevant information such as age, sex, ethnicity, symptom, intervention or medication using standard controlled vocabularies.”

The Utah Landscapes Exhibit is an examination of the beauty and wonder that can be found throughout Utah via the photographic eye of Steven Leitch.

Steven Leitch has been employed as a Medical Photographer for the University of Utah’s School of Medicine since 1977. During that time, he has seen photography make drastic changes in the field of image capture.

It’s a new age, but despite the ease and automation in today’s digital world, the art, eye and skills of the artist-photographer are still necessary to produce fine art photography.

Throughout this exhibit Steven Leitch has employed the ideals of photography as they were years ago: true, actual, and real. These images of scenic Utah were all taken with digital cameras. He has striven to keep these images just as he saw them.

The exhibit will be accessible during the Library’s open hours:
Monday – Thursday 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Friday 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

PMC has introduced PubReader, an easier way to read PMC articles on the web. The text is displayed as two columns which mimics the pages of a book. The navigation is simplified and all the figures are accessible from anywhere within article. Designed to improve display on the smaller screens of tablet devices, it also looks great on a computer. Although they have not finished testing, PubReader is supported on most browsers.

Try it out on some of the recent PMC articles published by University of Utah researchers.

The Wednesday, November 7 Library and Information Technology Forum features Mark Beekhuizen and Aaron Dewald talking about “Technology and Learning Science in Simulation.” Please join us in the Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Building, Room 2600 at 12:05-1:00 p.m. for this program.

Program Description: Have you ever wondered how world leaders know how to react in times of crisis? In fact, where do world leaders learn how to handle these difficult situations? Fortunately, the University of Utah College of Law trains tomorrow’s leaders for these contingencies.

Each year, the S.J. Quinney College of Law runs a day long counter-terrorism simulation that puts students in a real life crisis scenario. Through this interesting use of technology, students learn the skills necessary to act and react appropriately in crisis situations.

Presenters will talk about:

How we put together the simulation in conjunction with the Simulation Design Course taught at the College of Law

How to leverage technology to make a smooth, realistic scenario

What unfolds over the course of the twelve hour day

For more information and a short documentary about previous simulations, visit http://simulation.law.utah.edu

Presenters:
Mark Beekhuizen is the Director of Information Technology at the University of Utah S. J. Quinney College of Law. Mark is in a position where he is face-to-face with the social impacts of IT systems and change upon people and processes. The ability to daily engage in “beneficial work” is something too few IT leaders truly get to see firsthand. Mark is interested in supporting the growing movement to apply appropriate technology solutions to academic needs and the social impacts these systems and changes are having on the world around us.

Aaron Dewald is the Associate Director for the Center for Innovation in Legal Education at the University of Utah College of Law and a third year Ph.D. student in learning science at the College of Education. With his job and schooling, Aaron has a unique perspective on technology use in pedagogical situations. Aaron received his B.S. in Information Systems from North Dakota State University in 2001, and his M.Ed. in Instructional Design and Educational Technology from the University of Utah in 2010. Aaron co-teaches the Counterterrorism Simulation Design course with Professor Amos Guiora. He also teaches Introduction to Web-based Tools at the College of Education.
