As posted earlier, the U.S. National Library of Medicine sponsored a video contest to help promote awareness of the excellent resources it offers by creating “original short videos which promote awareness of these products and services.” A team from Eccles Library created a 50-second video promoting MedlinePlus, and succeeded in winning the grand prize! Congratulations to Nancy Lombardo and her team!

This past March the U.S. National Library of Medicine sponsored a video contest to help promote awareness of the excellent resources it offers by creating “original short videos which promote awareness of these products and services.” A team from Eccles Library created a 50-second video promoting MedlinePlus, which was scripted, filmed, edited and submitted in only five days! Trustworthy information on herbs and supplements

Are you or someone you know using or considering using herbal remedies or dietary supplements? Wondering if there is a reliable source of information on their effectiveness, usual dosage, and drug interactions? MedlinePlus recently released 100 new herb and supplement monographs in English and Spanish from Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Consumer Version (NMCD). These monographs contain several exciting new features, such as extensive reference lists with many links to PubMed and a “Share” button that allows you to easily share the content with friends and family. Check it out!

MedlinePlus has a new look

MedlinePlus has been redesigned with a new layout and color scheme. Highlights of the new design include:

A Videos & Cool Tools page that makes multimedia content easier to find and searchable.
A Share button on all health topic pages and interactive tutorials that allows you to share links to MedlinePlus through your favorite social networks. See the Diabetic Diet topic page as an example.
A medical dictionary search box on the English homepage for quick look-up of medical terms.
A search cloud widget on the homepage, and a widgets page where you can find options for embedding MedlinePlus content in your own blogs, personalized homepages, and other sites.

Spotlight on NLM resources

Did you know that you can access PubMed resources from your mobile device? Learn how at the monthly “Spotlight! On National Library of Medicine Resources” online workshop on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010, at 8:30 am MDT, 9:30 am CDT. This workshop is free but registration is requested. And in July, learn about using Mobile MedlinePlus and MedlinePlus Twitter. This second workshop will be offered on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, also at 8:30 am MDT, 9:30 am CDT.

The Eccles Health Sciences Library serves as a regional medical library (RML) for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) in the MidContinental Region (MCR), supporting collaboration among over 400 member libraries and information centers in the states of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. The monthly “Spotlight!” series is being presented by our knowledgeable NLM colleagues, and archives of all the workshops in this series are available online. Topics range from using the Household Products Database to genetics, family health history, and much more.
