Abstract:

Objective

Our objective in creating the Open Access fund was to promote awareness of this growing scholarly communication movement on our campus.  We did so by trying to fulfill the need for financial assistance to our student authors who cannot afford the open access fee.

Methods

A team was assembled to spearhead the planning of the fund’s pilot program composed of two Graduate Student Interns and a Research Librarian.  Student authors were the primary audience because we assumed first, that they have fewer options than other researchers for financial support, and secondly the library director secured matching funds from the Dean of the Graduate School.  The planning team established a timeline for the program and developed the rules.  The fund was marketed on the library’s “The Appendix” blog, and a one-time e-mail announcement to the campus.  Individual library liaisons also publicized the program.

Results and Discussion

The pilot program accepted applications for a month and with $6000 we funded nine applications.  Five awardees were students, two fellows, one resident and one faculty member.  Selection was based on a selection-flow chart created by one of the Interns.  In light of how many applications we received with how little marketing was done for the program we are re-evaluating our selection flow chart to work more effectively for our next round of the pilot program.

Conclusion

The first round of our pilot program was very successful.  Despite some of the quirks that will be worked out, the program fulfilled its primary purpose.
