Community-Based Participatory Research in Indian Country

Read the article "Lessons Learned from Community-Based Participatory Research in Indian Country" published in Cancer Control, November 2005 http://www.moffitt.org/moffittapps/ccj/v12s5/pdf/70.pdf
From the Conclusion: "CBPR provides the opportunity for a “win-win” relationship between an academic research institution and tribal organizations or communities. To secure funding, some projects assert that they are using a CBPR approach but in fact they do not follow the components necessary for true CBPR. The community must have at least an equal role in every step of the research process, from conceptualization of the research question through dissemination of the findings. CBPR works well in Indian communities, and it promotes unique, real outcomes: the program continues after outside funding ceases, the training received by local tribal people leads to their implementing similar skills for other projects, and local tribal services are more likely to change or improve."

Rural Health Disparties Guide

"Health disparities, often associated with urban ethnic and racial populations, persist in rural America as well. Ethnicity or race may have less of an impact on the types of health disparities in rural areas than geography, social status, life style, and job availability. While 20% of the United States population lives in rural areas higher rates of chronic illness and poor overall health are found in those communities when compared to urban populations. Rural residents are older, poorer, and have fewer physicians to care for them." The guide, created by the Rural Assistance Center, inlcudes an overview of the topic, along with frequently asked questions and links to resources, including organizations, publications, maps, and related web sites. http://www.raconline.org/info_guides/disparities/ Two new additional guides are: Child Support http://www.raconline.org/info_guides/child_support/ and Hospice and Palliative Care http://www.raconline.org/info_guides/hospice/ [posted on Rural Assistance Center Human Services Update]

Health Insurance Plans Addressing Gaps in Care Experienced by the Nation's Minorities
Two-thirds of consumers receive their coverage from an organization that collects data on the race and ethnicity of members, up from just over half three years ago, according to a study released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). Before 2003, national studies had identified very few providers or institutions that were addressing disparities in care using a data-driven, quality improvement approach.

Reducing Racial and Ethnic Disparities & Improving Quality of Health Care
This RWJF-supported report by the nation's major health plans summarizes and shares what those companies know about disparities in health care delivery. The authors propose key steps to build on that knowledge—collecting additional data, enhancing access for non-English speakers, supporting investment in disparities reduction, and disseminating what member plans have learned.

Portrait of Medicaid's High Cost Populations

"The Foundation's Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured (KCMU) released a new report, Profiles of Medicaid’s High Cost Populations, which examines the role that Medicaid plays in addressing six populations with serious health needs resulting in high costs. For each population profiled (preterm birth babies, foster care children, individuals with spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries, individuals with mental illness, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and people with Alzheimer's disease), the report describes the condition and the need for services and supports, as well as the role of Medicaid in meeting those needs. Profiles of six real people with these conditions are included with descriptions of model programs or cutting edge practices designed to meet the health needs of these individuals. The new report highlights Medicaid’s role in anchoring care for individuals with exceptional needs." http://www.kff.org/medicaid/7565.cfm [Kaiser Family Foundation email alert]
