Blog problems

The BHIC blog has been under attack by spam bots, making it difficult for me to post items. For some reason, i am able to make posts right now, but i dont' know if i will get back in again. On Thursday, we are updating the blog to take care of this. I will be flying to Houston that day though, so I don't know if i will be able to have online access or not. (When I say "we" will be updating, I really mean the wonderful technical support people for the University of Utah Eccles Health Sciences Library!) All of which is to say, things may be quiet for a few days!

1,000 posts

The BHIC blog began in March 2004. This entry is the 1,000th post! It seemed that it should be worth noting this milestone! Thanks to all of you who tune in, who share resources, who work to increase access to health information in the work that you do!!!

I am in Salt Lake City at the Midcontinental Chapter of the Medical Library Association's annual meeting. http://www.mcmla.org/ I've been listening to librarians talk about how to reach out to their communities, how to partner up with organizations, and generally how to be a vital force within and outside of their institutions. I am glad to be associated with such dedicated and caring people!

The Depository Library Council (DLC) invites the library community and general public to post their comments on, “Toward a Vision of the Government Information Environment of the 21st Century: A Draft Outline,” on the DLC Vision Outline Blog at http://dlcvisionoutline.blogspot.com.

With the advent of the Web access to Federal Government information has expanded far beyond Federal Depository Libraries. The current environment presents challenges to Federal Depository Libraries in four key areas:

Library Roles in the Non-Exclusive Environment
Managing Collection and Delivering Content

Dairy May Not Help Weight Loss Much After All

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_24124.html
By Alison McCook

Friday, April 15, 2005

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Downing lots of dairy food appears to do little in the short term for young women's waistlines, despite earlier reports that eating dairy products can help people lose weight, new study findings show.

After following women for one year, Indiana researchers found that those who ate the most dairy -- equivalent to 3 to 4 glasses of milk per day -- were no more likely to gain or lose weight than people who took in no more than the equivalent of 1 glass of milk per day.

These findings suggest that if dairy products have any effect on body weight, it may take longer than a year to make a noticeable difference, study author Dr. Dorothy Teegarden of Purdue University in West Lafayette told Reuters Health.

"It is likely that the effect of calcium or dairy products on preventing gain of body fat is relatively small, and therefore it will take a long time to see the changes," she said.

Beds being donated to non profits

Radisson Hotels & Resorts are replacing more than 90,000 beds across the nation. Consequently, king, queen and double-sized beds, including headboards, are being made available to local nonprofit agencies. The beds are all in good condition, sanitized, and will be delivered free-of-charge - in bulk - to nonprofit agencies. To qualify for the program, a nonprofit must commit to taking at least 200 beds. Nonprofit agencies will then be responsible for distributing the beds to their programs and/or to individuals and families.

"Hope for the City," a Minnesota-based nonprofit is coordinating the transit and delivery of the beds. Agencies that are interesting in obtaining beds should contact "Hope for the City" at 952-897-7799 to coordinate availability, timing and delivery of the beds.

National COPD Day

This year, November 17 is World COPD Day. Its purpose is to raise awareness of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and to encourage education activities in countries world wide. To support the 2004 theme “Don’t Ignore COPD,” the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) offers two suggestions for patients and the public:

Use the NHLBI Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Data Fact Sheet http://hp2010.nhlbihin.net/emails/111604.htm to point out the importance of COPD in the US. (This link takes you to the online catalog where you can order this fact sheet at no cost for the first copy)

Refer patients to the COPD topic in the NHLBI Diseases and Conditions Index (DCI)http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/Copd/Copd_WhatIs.html . This information resource is free, printable, and emailable. [posted by the Information Network of the National, Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)]

The Choice Game Curriculum

The Choice Game™ CD ROM entertains and educates students as they reexamine risk-taking behaviors in a contemporary and exciting way. With each choice made, decision-making skills are exercised and learned. The curriculum uses a computer-based game to challenge students with real life scenarios and influences involving drugs, alcohol, STDs, smoking, the media, communication skills and sex before marriage

The game is funded through the Department of Health and Human Services. Numerous focus groups were conducted to ensure that the scripts, content and actors were acceptable to both the students and the educators. Our SPRANS grant funds place The Choice Game™ curriculum in 28 schools in Newark, NJ educating 10,000 students from July 2001 through July 2005.

PBS documentary on Disability

P.O.V.'s 'Freedom Machines' Looks at Disability Through the Lens of Technology, Tuesday, Sept. 14 on PBS

High school student Latoya Nesmith of Albany, N.Y. dreams of becoming a translator at the United Nations as she completes her classroom assignments using a keyboard that mitigates her limited dexterity. Floyd Stewart, paralyzed in mid-life by a car accident, uses assistive technologies to run Middle Tennessee's Center for Independent Living. Blind physicist Dr. Kent Cullers taught computers to do what his ears can do, and ! now leads the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in Palo Alto, Calif. Susanna Sweeney-Martini is completing her college education in Seattle with the aid of a power wheelchair and voice-input software.

These are a few of the people whose stories are at the center of Freedom Machines, a new documentary having its broadcast premiere Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. (check local listings) on PBS' acclaimed non-fiction series P.O.V. This poignant and thought-provoking film tells the stories of people typically labeled (and dismissed) as "disabled", whose determination and access to inventive new technologies are transforming their lives and their communities.
