Nebraska Cultural Competency Workshops

Eliminating Health Disparities: The Role of Cultural Competency -- May 22-23, 20026 Omaha, NE
With the ever-increasing racial and ethnic diversity of the U.S. and well-documented evidence of racial and ethnic disparities in health care, it is critical that health care professionals are educated to address issues of culture in an effective manner. This conference brings together a distinguished faculty of national experts to discuss how cultural competency in both the work force and our healthcare institutions can play a role in reducing disparities.

Latino Health Issues for Primary Care Providers: Achieving Better Health Outcomes -- May 24-25, 2006 Omaha, NE
The 2000 U.S. Census revealed that Latinos are this nation's fastest growing minority population. Between 1990 and 2000, the Latino population grew by nearly 58 percent. The growth in some regions and states was even more dramatic. Nebraska is among ten states with the largest change in the number of Latinos between 1990 and 2000 with an increase of approximately 155%. With the growth of the Latino population, Nebraska's primary care providers play an important role in the elimination of the health disparities that many Latinos experience.

For further information on topics, speakers, and how to register, please visit http://www.unmc.edu/dept/cce/index.cfm?L1_ID=1&CONREF=1 where you can also download the brochure describing these conferences.

Mention central Nebraska to most Americans, and they’re likely to think it’s about as ethnically homogeneous as anywhere in the United States. But recent immigrants from Central and South America have shifted the demographic landscape."

Future Leaders Exchange Program

The Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) was established in 1992 as the centerpiece of the NIS Secondary School Initiative with FREEDOM Support Act funding from the State Department and USAID. Its goal is to provide an opportunity for high school students from the countries of the former Soviet Union to experience life in a democratic society in order to promote democratic values and institutions in Eurasia. http://exchanges.state.gov/education/citizens/students/eurasia/flex.htm

This year, Omaha's AIM Institute will place 40 FLEX students in communities within 75 miles of the Omaha-metro area. MedlinePlus "Goes Local" with Missouri

Missourians have a new way to connect to local health services. NLM's MedlinePlus consumer health web site now includes Go Local links to Missouri's Community Connection (http://communityconnection.org) online services directory. Missouri is the second state, after North Carolina, to complete a Go Local connection with MedlinePlus.

MedlinePlus health topic pages http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/healthtopics.html now have links to related health services throughout Missouri. With this new Go Local link, an adult child concerned about a parent's Alzheimer 's disease can find information about the condition in MedlinePlus and then find listings of services near where the parent lives. A Missouri patient can learn more about a recent cancer diagnosis from MedlinePlus and then find local support groups or volunteer organizations willing to help. And, a Missouri parent finding day care services through Community Connection can learn more about childhood development and illnesses on MedlinePlus. These patients and families will all benefit from the Go Local links between MedlinePlus and Community Connection.

A special feature of Community Connection Go Local is the "Ask A Librarian" service from the J. Otto Lottes Health Science Library at the University of Missouri-Columbia. This link brings Missourians the services of expert information professionals in answering their questions.

The Missouri Go Local Project is a partnership of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine-Midcontinental Region, Missouri Foundation for Health, and the University of Missouri-Columbia, including MU Extension, the Office of Social and Economic Data Analysis, the J. Otto Lottes Health Science Library, and Health Management and Informatics program.

For more information about the Go Local project, including how to participate, visit "Go Local" --A Project of MedlinePlus (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/golocal.html).
