This teaching exercise has been written to allow learners flexibility in the way that they navigate through the case. The experience should take 30-90 minutes to complete, depending on learners' pre-existing level of familiarity with neonatal health problems. We would encourage you to go through the case sequentially, and to explore as much of the information as possible. As a result of this case exercise, you should be able to:
Given an infant that presents with cyanosis in the newborn period, create a list of diagnoses to be considered (i.e. a differential diagnosis)
List the factors necessary for cyanosis to occur in a newborn
Identify physical examination findings that will allow you to narrow your differential diagnosis
Choose appropriate diagnostic tests that would lead you to a correct diagnosis
Specify initial steps in the treatment of your patient that are critical to survival
Demonstrate the ability to consult at the appropriate time and with the appropriate expert for further management and education following your initial diagnosis and intervention
