Web Gallery: New Models of Scholarly Publishing

New models of scholarly publishing are evolving to address issues related to access, archiving, copyright, cost, currency, licensing, etc. The Web Gallery provides links to websites that discuss this important concept of new publishing models, offering possible solutions for free versus fee access, archiving, cost containment and timely access to the latest research.

arXiv
ArXiv is an e-print service in the fields of physics, mathematics, non-linear science and computer science. The contents of arXiv conform to Cornell University academic standards. arXiv is owned, operated and funded by Cornell University, a private not-for-profit educational institution. ArXiv is also partially funded by the National Science Foundation.

BioMedCentral
BiomedCentral is an independent online publishing house that provides free access to peer-reviewed biological and medical research it publishes. BioMedCentral promotes rapid and efficient communication of science. The University of Utah is a member.

Create Change
A resource for faculty and librarian action to reclaim scholarly communication. CREATE CHANGE is a response to the serious crisis in scholarly communication. A number of factors, chiefly the dramatic increases in journal costs and the increasing commercialization of scholarly publishing, have decreased scholars' access to essential research resources all over the world.

eScholarship
A program of the University of California, eScholarship is hosted by UC's California Digital Library. In partnership with librarians, scholars, academic publishers, information technologists, and professionals in other memory organizations (e.g., archives, historical societies, museums), eScholarship works to explore and enable new modes of scholarly publication.

Over 1400 of the world’s leading scientists select and evaluate the best papers in biology on the Faculty 1000 website. Papers are highlighted on the basis of their scientific merit. Faculty 1000 hosts a unique organization and personalization features, including personalized email alerts. They offer an immediate rating of individual papers by the authors' peers. Office of Scientific and Technical Information
The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) provides access to a wealth of energy, science, and technology research and development (R&D) information from the Manhattan Project to the present. OSTI's mission is to collect, preserve, disseminate, and leverage the scientific and technical information (STI) resources of DOE to expand the knowledge base of science and technology and facilitate scientific discovery and application.

Professional/Scholarly Publishing
Members of the Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division (PSP) publish, in print and electronic form, the vast majority of materials produced and used by scholars and professionals in science, medicine, technology, business, law, and the humanities. Division members produce books, journals, computer software, databases and CD-ROM. The nature of the products PSP members produce makes all developments affecting electronic publishing and the National Information Infrastructure of particular interest to the division.

Public Library of Science
The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a non-profit organization of scientists committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a public resource. They are working to establish online public libraries of science that will archive and freely distribute the complete contents of every published scientific article.

PubMed Central
Managed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Library of Medicine, PubMed Central is a digital archive of life sciences journal literature. Access to PubMed Central (PMC) is free and unrestricted.

Society for Scholarly Publishing
The mission of SSP is to advance scholarly publishing and communication, and the professional development of its members through education, collaboration, and networking among individuals in this field. SSP provides the opportunity for interaction among members in all aspects of scholarly publishing, including journal and book publishers, librarians, manufacturers, and web editors.

SPARC
SPARC is an alliance of 200 member institutions world-wide. SPARC supports development of vibrant and economically viable new models of scholarly communication. They do this by working with publishers whose business goals are compatible with SPARC. SPARC encourages competition so that journal subscriptions are reasonably priced and libraries can afford them. One of SPARC's goals is to stimulate creation of better, faster, and more economically sustainable systems for distributing new knowledge.
