Tutorial 1: Obtaining and analyzing a 7 Day Food Intake Record for Protein and KCalorie Intake using the Higgins method

Procedure for completing a written form for obtaining a 7 Day Food Intake Record

Please Note:

This is the method you will learn in this tutorial. Please read the entire screen before printing forms.

Preparation:

  1. You will need to print Form B, the 7 Day Food Intake Record.

  2. You may wish to also print out a copy of this page for reference while completing the food record, OR to guide your oral instruction to clients who are given the food record to complete.

An abbreviated version of the procedures detailed below is found at the top of Form B, the 7 Day Food Intake Record.

These are the steps you will need to follow:

  1. Start with yesterday or today's (Day 1) food intake. List all foods you eat each day for 7 days, in the designated areas on the form.

You may record foods as you eat them during the day, or at the end of each day e.g. scan the list on all pages of the form, and recall and record what you ate that day.

Record your food intake EACH DAY.

  2. Find the appropriate FOOD CATEGORY in which to record each food you eat. For example, if you have a sandwich, you will record the bread in the BREADS section and the Tuna Salad filling in the PROTEIN SANDWICH FILL section.

For casseroles or other mixed dishes, estimate and record the amount of potatoes or pasta in those sections, amount of vegetables in that section, and amount of meats in the appropriate section.

If you truly cannot find a place to put a food, record and describe it at the bottom of the form.

  3. Estimate and record the AMOUNT of the food in teaspoons, tablespoons, cups or parts thereof, ounces or slices.

For fresh fruit, indicate one piece, e.g Apple, or part thereof, e.g. 1/2 grapefruit. You do not have to state small, medium or large.

If you are unsure about beverage ounces, you may wish to measure commonly used glasses at home, one time only, using a measuring cup and water. You may add up the total amount of a beverage for a day, e.g. 32 oz. whole milk, or record it as you drank it, e.g. 8oz-8oz-8oz-8oz or 1/2 cup, 2 cups, 1 cup, 1/2 cup. (c)

Record butter, mayonaise, jam, peanut butter, etc. by teaspoons (tsp) or tablespoons. (T)

Do a careful estimate. However, you do not need to measure or weigh your food as you eat it.

  4. Return your 7 day record to your health care provider or childbirth educator for their analysis as instructed or analyze it yourself.

  5. To analyze the 7 day food intake record, go to the Procedure for analysis of average daily amounts of Protein and KCalories.
