Nurse-
Midwifery Program Overview

The University of Utah Graduate Nurse-Midwifery Program began in 1965 and graduated its first Nurse-Midwifery class in 1967. This high quality Nurse-Midwifery education program is accredited by the ACME Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (formerly the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), Division of Accreditation). This organization establishes the Criteria for Pre-Accreditation and Accreditation of Education Programs in Nurse-Midwifery in the United States.

The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates who are competent to facilitate high level wellness in women throughout their reproductive lifespan, as well as manage the course of normal childbearing. A participative process of care is fostered wherein women are empowered to assume appropriate self-care responsibility.

The graduate program leads to a Master of Science degree or a post Master's Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery. Both part-time and full-time study options are available. Students may apply for financial aid from a number of sources.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the National Certification Examination of the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB), formerly the ACNM Certification Council (ACC). They may then become licensed to practice as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) in any of the 50 states and Puerto Rico.
