The Obama Administration is investing $48 billion in health information technology to support an agile, learning healthcare system. This plenary will show how radically different approaches to patient-centered computing systems can produce a flexible information infrastructure that supports and facilitates innovation not only in health care and public health but also scientific discovery.
Attendees will learn about personally controlled health records and their emerging role for wellness, disease management, population health monitoring, research, and health information exchange. They will get a glimpse into a transformative project in HIT creation of the app store for health.
Introduced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in November 2010, MedlinePlus Connect is a free service that allows any electronic health record (EHR) system to link to relevant, authoritative, and up-to-date health information in MedlinePlus. MedlinePlus Connect delivers consumer-level information about conditions and disorders, health and wellness, and prescription and over-the-counter medications to patients, families, and health care provides at the point of care. The presentation will focus on how the service works, why the service is needed and how health care providers and health sciences libraries can get involved.
