A Primer on Fair Use and the
TEACH Act

Program Description
The presenters will discuss the four fair use factors and their application in the University setting and will also present an overview of the Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization Act (TEACH Act).

Presenters
Heidi Alder, Research Attorney, Office of General Counsel.
Heidi Alder graduated from the Brigham Young University Law School in 2005. Following law school, she was an associate at Snow, Christensen & Martineau until she recently joined the Office of General Counsel as a research attorney. Prior to law school, Heidi taught Jr. High for three years and currently teaches part-time at residential treatment center in Layton, Utah.

Michele Ballantyne, Associate General Counsel, Office of General Counsel.
Michele Ballantyne graduated from the University of Utah College of Law in 1991 where she served on the Executive Board of the Utah Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif. Following law school, Michele clerked for Justice Christine M. Durham on the Utah Supreme Court and for Judge Michael R. Murphy on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. She was an associate at Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall & McCarthy. Michele joined the University's Office of General Counsel in 1998. She advises the University on a variety of issues, including copyright matters.

Alice Whitacre, Associate General Counsel, Office of General Counsel.
Alice Whitacre graduated from Princeton University in 1982, and from Boston University School of Law in 1989. Alice joined the law firm of Jones, Waldo, Holbrook and McDonough in 1989, and became a shareholder of that firm in 1996. Her practice at Jones Waldo focused on commercial real estate and business transactions. Alice joined the University's Office of General Counsel in 1998. She advises the University on contracts and business transactions.
