Consumer Health Information for All

Ensuring good health for ourselves and our loved ones has become a primary focus for many Americans. At the beginning of the 21st century, we are experiencing the convergence of health challenges for individuals with a dysfunctional national health care system stretched to the breaking point. The realities we face include a larger aging population, an increase in health risk behaviors including obesity, inactivity and an increase in fast food consumption. These are coupled with diminished health care benefits and rising health care costs. It is currently estimated that 44 million Americans are not covered by medical insurance at all and for those who are, employers are decreasing the amounts they can cover for employees and their families. For many families this means making a choice between food on the table, medications or doctor visits for family member. There has never been a more critical time for citizens to become well informed about their own health care.

Free Classes

Access to effective, high-quality, free health information is one of the most effective ways to be an informed consumer of health care. The Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah offers hands-on Internet classes covering authoritative yet user-friendly health resources provided electronically through Utahealthnet, Utah’s online partnership of consumer health information (http://utahealthnet.org). Resources from the Eccles Library as well as the Utah Department of Health and other local health information providers will be discussed. Authoritative resources from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health and multiple other government agencies will be shown. Also health Internet resources linked via Pioneer: Utah’s Online Library and available through your public library will be shown. Information on how to be a savvy Internet searcher will be covered. Members of the Eccles Library Outreach Team would be pleased to provide this one hour training to practitioners and citizens through health care and educational organizations or in partnership with public libraries throughout Utah.
