Borrow, Renew, and Request Library Materials and Services

Borrow

Circulation privileges are extended to current University of Utah faculty, emeriti faculty, staff, and students; faculty, emeriti faculty, staff, and students of Utah Academic Library Consortium (UALC) member institutions; and Marriott Library free and paid Permit users. Users must have a current University of Utah ID, a UALC member college ID, or library permit to check out materials. Changes of address or other borrower information should be reported to the appropriate circulation department. Lost or stolen ID cards or library permits should be reported immediately. Fines over $50.00 will result in a suspension of borrowing privileges.

Borrower's Responsibilities

  • You are responsible for all materials checked out on your account and any fees or damages incurred until the item is returned.
  • Your library privileges are not transferable; do not loan your Ucard, Library Permit, or borrowed items to others. Also, do not depend on others to return items for you.
  • Responsibility for unauthorized use or loss of your Ucard or Library Permit lies with the person to whom it is issued.
  • Report a stolen or lost UCard immediately to UCard office: https://ucard.utah.edu/
  • It is the responsibility of you, as the borrower, to note the time and date that materials are due. Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to receive these notices does not remove the borrower's obligation to return material by the due date, nor does it constitute grounds for reducing a borrower's fines.
  • When another borrower requests an item that is currently on loan to you, the item is considered Recalled. Please be aware that when materials are recalled the loan will be shortened. The new due date is noted on the recall notice. Items may be recalled at any time, and thus it is recommended that items should be returned prior to travel.
  • If you receive overdue notices for materials that you believe have been returned, contact Eccles Library Circulation by phone, text, chat, or visiting the front desk during service hours.
  • Items should be returned on time and in the same condition as when they were loaned to you.
  • It is the responsibility of you, as the borrower, to note any existing damage to library material and bring it to the attention of a library employee so as to not incur a fee.
  • The Library reserves the right to refuse access and borrowing privileges to any person who fails to observe the Borrower's Responsibilities and Patron Policies & Responsibilities.

UALC Reciprocal Borrowing Privileges

The services, including borrowing privileges, of most college libraries in Utah are made available by agreement of the Utah Academic Library Consortium. This means UALC graduate and undergraduate students, staff, and faculty may use the Eccles Health Sciences Library; and UHealth students, staff, and faculty may use the libraries at other UALC colleges. Eligible borrowers include all faculty, staff, and students of UALC member institutions with proof of current affiliation and legal photo ID.

Eligible UALC Reciprocal Circulation patrons agree to:

  • Present a current, valid legal photo identification AND proof of current enrollment/employment.
    • Proof of current enrollment can be, but may not be limited to: A reciprocal borrower logs into their university's website and voluntarily shows current registration.
    • Proof of current employment can be, but may not be limited to: A reciprocal borrower logs into their university website and voluntarily shows proof of current employment.
  • Notify the Library of address changes.
  • Pay any late fees and/or replacement costs and fees assessed by the Library.
  • Return items directly to the lending library when possible, or return items to their home library's Interlibrary Loan office.

UALC Library Permit restrictions

  • Allows a maximum of 5 concurrent checkouts. Renewals, recalls, and holds are not available.
  • Requests can only be made at Eccles Health Sciences Library front desk.
  • Closed reserve, special collections, technology, and equipment loans are not available for checkout.
  • Interlibrary Loan services are not available. Talk to your home institution for this service.
  • Due to the license agreements the Eccles Health Sciences Library has negotiated with vendors and publishers, most of the databases, online journals and electronic books offered by the Library are only available to University of Utah students, faculty, and other employees. Individuals who are not current students, faculty members, or otherwise employed by the University may secure access to some electronic resources if using a Library computer.

Failure to timely return materials checked out from the Library will result in fines and may result in revocation of borrowing privileges. The failure to timely pay library fees may result in referral to a collection agency. In such circumstances, the patron will be responsible for all fines incurred as well as all costs to collect the unpaid fines, including attorney's fees.

Patrons can register for a UALC Library Permit in person at the Eccles Health Sciences Library front desk during service hours.

    Renewals & Loan Periods

Many items will automatically renew. To check the status on your borrowed items, or manually renew or request library materials, log in with your uNID to your library account.

Circulating library materials may be checked out from the Eccles Health Sciences Library front desk. General collection books usually circulate for 120 days to University of Utah faculty, students, staff, and Library Permit holders. Browsing collection items may be checked out for 30 days. Items on closed reserve have a loan period of two hours. Most equipment has a loan period of three days.

If you have a question about the circulation period for a particular item, check the library catalog or inquire at out front desk during service hours. Please be aware that when materials are recalled, the loan will be shortened to 14 days. The new due date will be noted on the recall notice sent to your email. Items may be recalled at any time so they should be returned prior to travel.

    Lost Item Charges

If an item is more than 30 days overdue, it is considered "lost." Replacement fees for lost items are the current cost to replace the item and a $10 processing fee. Alternately, you may purchase a replacement copy if it is in good condition and the same edition as the lost copy. Replacement charges will be waived, and processing fees reduced if you choose this option.
