Dr. White is the principal investitgator and principal scientist working with the NIH sponsored Anticonvulsant Drug Development Program established in 1975 to identify novel anticonvulsant drugs using established animal models of epilepsy. His research is focused on understanding the factors which contribute to the initiation, propagation and amelioration of seizure activity. Dr. White utilizes a variety of in vivo and in vitro model systems to identify and characterize the mechanisms of action of existing and newly designed anticonvulsant drugs. In addition, his work has focused on understanding the pathophysiology of audiogenic seizures in the genetically audiogenic susceptible Frings mouse. A greater understanding of the factors that contribute to seizures and of the mechanisms through which drugs block seizures should lead to the design of more efficacious and less toxic anticonvulsant drugs for the treatment of epilepsy.
