Brief Summary of the Case

Tommy is a 10 year old boy who is repeating 3rd grade in the public school system. He has had difficulty with reading since the 1st grade. This year, his work has become sloppy, and he has become disruptive in the classroom.

Learning Objectives

This teaching exercise has been written to allow learners flexibility in the way that they navigate through the case. The experience should take 30-90 minutes to complete, depending on learners' pre-existing level of familiarity with childhood learning problems. We would encourage you to go through the case sequentially, and to explore as much of the information as possible. As a result of this case exercise, you should be able to:

• list a differential diagnosis of school problems and inattention.
• interpret school evaluation results.
• describe the pediatrician's role in the treatment plan for children with school problems.
