[edit] INTRODUCTION TO THE MEDIA ON DEMAND WIKI (MODwiki)
[edit] The MODwiki Provides Context to Media On Demand
Media On Demand has become a staple in content delivery. With video, many programs are now supplied through VOD or Video On Demand services offered by cable, Internet providers, and content distributors (such as iTunes, Google Video, WindowsMedia Guide, or Atom Films).
Broadening the scope of Video on Demand to include Media on Demand means including multiple media types (such as video, audio, image, text, and interactive objects), asset and content management systems, learning objects, media architectures and standards, and alternative delivery methods. Regardless of the file format, however, On Demand services enable end users to request content at the time and place of their choosing, while being constrained by permissions and obligations associated with intellectual property and digital rights management.
A great deal of technical information must accompany any discussion of Media On Demand because of the constantly changing state of the tools, the art, the industry, and technological capabilities --what it is, how to implement it, and how to serve its consumers. The Media on Demand Committee for the University of Utah monitors the dynamics of Media on Demand and updates content regularly on this Media On Demand wiki (MODwiki), an online collaborative writing environment. The OIT MOD Committee webpage documents the University of Utah's Media On Demand strategies, policies and guidelines, with links to the MODwiki for its up-to-the-minute information.
The underlying purpose of the University of Utah MODwiki is to provide background information, definitions, best practices, guides, referrals, and industry perspectives on the many facets of Media On Demand, particularly when applied in educational settings that service University of Utah students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and related communities. It provides a way to contextualize University policies and guidelines for Media On Demand.
