NOVEL Steering Committee minutes

Monday March 8, 2010

Present: Ed Fitzgibbon, Deborah Friedman, Nancy Lombardo, Leah Levi, Kathleen Digre

NOVEL Goals for the coming year are:

• Within the next year, we will get our 3 All Star Grand Rounds up and running. Then development can go after funds to support building the collection.
All Star Grand Rounds—5 K is allotted for this by NANOS. Deb has done the first one and she will write up the steps of how she did it, so we can develop check lists of the parts. She will ask Eric Eggenberger to do the next one. She has a list of all of the potential topics and creators—and will resend the list. Nancy and Kathleen will look into a new web-format to house the videos and links. The budget is how much it costs to produce the video; plus the speaker honorarium of $1000 to do this since it covers a talk, power point slides, written handout with links, and CME questions.
Action: Deb will write up how she did All Star Grand rounds and send the list of parts, and list of topics and presenters. She will ask Eric
Action: Nancy and Ray will find a web-based way to present
• Begin to add NANOS syllabi into the collection
• Complete the Walsh sessions – add older abstracts
David Knox supplied Walsh abstracts for 1969-72 and 1980. Neil Miller supplied 1987 and 1990. We now have all abstracts except for the 1967-68 meetings, of which we were unaware until this meeting. Steve Newman says he can supply those. Nancy will email him to request that he send them. Ed Fitzgibbon supplied the video of presentations from 2008.

Other projects:
Leah will work on corrections in Kennerdell’s collection, but we need to find a new peer review chair. She will ask Simmons or Aki. We need a review team like a journal:
• Potential Pupil reviewers: Aki, Byron, Digre, Kardon
• Potential Eye Movement: Janine Johnson, Mark Morrow, Bill Fletcher, David Newman-Toker, Mike Brodsky, Agnes Wong,’

We need to charge CME—Ivy would have to look into Web CME
Actions items:
Kathleen to see about how much to charge for CME
Ask Ivy to check on CME for All Star Grand rounds

Amin Kassam has a surgical collection. Howard Krauss knows him.
Action: Deb will ask Howard to approach and see if he is interested.

Add a SNOMED field to all collections? How do we want to accomplish this? Do we want to add ICD Codes or just vocabulary?
Action: gets some direction from Larry on what we want to do with SNOMED and ICD

Figure out a way to get all NANOS members involved in the project

Registration: Need to make the registration more prominent, advertise on the home page. Action: Nancy will work with Web developer to revise form and make more prominent.

Developments at the meeting:
Kathleen met with Nick Hogan. He is being sent all Cogan’s glass slides and whatever is left at NEI. After her receives the material, Nancy Lombardo, Kathleen and Nick will have a conference call. There is quite a bit of material in Utah, sent from NEI with Ed Fitzgibbon’s help. It is unclear what is contained in this set of material. The electronic materials in Karl Kupfer’s collection are available to NOVEL, also. We are not sure how that might fit in or how it might be extracted so that it can be added to NOVEL.

David Newman-Toker: provided his instructions on how to conduct the “H.I.N.T.S.” eye exam elements to detect stroke among patients with acute dizziness.

They are fairly large .avi files. He will also contribute a couple on the Hallpike maneuver/BPPV and then a few others worth posting soon on impaired smooth pursuit, abnormal head impulse, skew deviation/OTR, and a penlight test result.

Randy Kardon: He is working on preparing his collection of videos and will start sending them soon.

Jonathan Trobe: Wishes to add the PDF versions of the posters of luminaries in the field.

Burde Collection: This is in a closet at Albert Einstein University in NY. Chris Wertenbaker knows about it. Larry may have details.

JNO: Kathleen will speak with Mike Siatokowski about getting the Clinical Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology to bring the early archives of the journal.
