Benign nephrosclerosis includes thickened and narrowed arteries and patchy loss of glomeruli. Note the nearly sclerotic glomerulus along with a residual functional glomerulus. There can be sufficient renal reserve capacity to maintain adequate renal function for many years, but the disease is progressive.
