The Eccles Health Sciences Library has partnered with the College of Nursing, Edible Campus Gardens and the FeedU Pantry to build a Seed Library! It is aimed at increasing access to locally grown food, providing food for those with food insecurity, facilitating local plant resilience to disease, and promoting community well-being for Health Sciences students, staff and faculty.
We will hold a seed and seedling swap event in front of the Eccles Health Sciences Library on Friday, May 14, 2021! Stop by our table set up by our medicinal garden between 10am-2pm.
Borrowers “check out” seeds and plant them in their own gardens. After a successful season, they then harvest seeds to return to the library. We are currently seeking opportunities for additional funding to obtain additional seeds, as well as a variety of display materials, gardening tools and books to enhance the utility of the seed library and promote successful gardening for all of our borrowers.
To check out some seeds, simply come to our browsing section shelves next to the front desk of the Eccles Health Sciences Library and grab some for yourself! There are smaller envelopes for everyone to take only the amount of seeds they may need, as well as a small informational zine about seed libraries.
Other locations for the seed library beside the Eccles Health Sciences Library include The Feed U Pantry and Edible Campus Gardens. Funding for this project provided by the Office of Wellness and Integrative Health. If you have any questions, please email: Jennifer.Macali@nurs.utah.edu.
