Introducing the XR Classroom

The Eccles Health Sciences Library has built out a virtual simulation space for the health sciences in the Eccles Health Sciences Education Building (EHSEB). The fully-equipped and staff-supported Extended Reality (XR) Classroom helps foster a community of cross-disciplinary collaboration and peer-to-peer learning lowering the barrier to entry for those interested in ways virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and other immersive technologies can drive innovative teaching and research on the University of Utah campus.

Designed after consulting with 13 XR spaces from throughout the country, the XR Classroom is a new space that serves the entire University of Utah community with a focus on providing a simulation space for the health sciences schools and colleges. The space has the following attributes:

  • Modular set up to include different formations of tables and chairs including rows, groups or standing
  • Large screen for presentations and projections
  • Whiteboard
  • 30 Standalone (Oculus Quest 2) and 15 tethered VR headsets (Vive Pro)
  • Staff assisted with technical knowledge

The XR Classroom is located in room 2880, on the second floor of the EHSEB. Feel free to drop in during open hours every Wednesday from 12 noon – 1pm. To learn more about the available games and applications for the space, or to schedule the room, head on over to our Technology Hubs page.
