Read on to learn about the Eccles Health Sciences Library Staff Reading Recommendations this semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-default\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"663\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Never-Caught-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14756 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Never-Caught-1.jpeg 663w, https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Never-Caught-1-199x300.jpeg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 663px) 100vw, 663px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Elaine Thornton, Assistant Director for the History of Health Sciences recommends <em>Never Caught: the Washington\u2019s Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge<\/em>, written by Erica Armstrong Dunbar. <em>Never Caught <\/em>is the compelling true story of George and Martha Washington\u2019s runaway slave, Ona Judge. When George Washington was elected as president, he served in New York and then Philadelphia, which at the time was the temporary seat of the nation\u2019s capital. Pennsylvania law required enslaved people to be set free after six months of residency in the state. Rather than comply with this law, Washington sent his nine slaves back south or out of the state to avoid freeing them. At 22 years old, Ona Judge fled Washington\u2019s estate in pursuit of freedom in New England.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Shawn Steidinger, Associate Librarian for Clinical Services recommends <em>Cutting for Stone<\/em>, written by Abraham Varghese. Twin brothers, Marion and Shiva, are the children of an Indian nun and a British surgeon. When their mother dies and their father disappears, they come of age on the brink of the Ethiopian revolution. The story explores the brothers\u2019 shared fascination with medicine through the waves of love, betrayal, and fate from Ethiopia to New York City and back again.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"615\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Cutting-For-Stone.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14767 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Cutting-For-Stone.jpeg 615w, https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Cutting-For-Stone-185x300.jpeg 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"662\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Felix-Ever-After.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14768 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Felix-Ever-After.jpeg 662w, https:\/\/library.med.utah.edu\/blog\/eccles\/files\/2023\/09\/Felix-Ever-After-199x300.jpeg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Nena Schvaneveldt, Associate Director of Clinical, Research, and Education recommends <em>Felix Ever After<\/em>, written by Kacen Callender. Felix has never been in love, and desperately wants to know what being in love might be like and why it seems easy for everyone but him to find someone. Even though he is proud of his identity, Felix secretly fears that he\u2019s one marginalization too many\u2014Black, queer, and transgender\u2014to get his own happily-ever-after.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Olivia Kavapalu, Public Services Supervisor, recommends <em>Lighter Than My Shadow<\/em>, a graphic novel by Katie Green. Content warnings include eating disorder, self-harm, and sexual violence. The memoir explores Green\u2019s experiences with disordered eating. Olivia says, \u201c[This book] is a vulnerable autobiographical graphic novel depicting ongoing struggles and recovery throughout a lifetime. Her book is a series of funny, insightful stories from the early days of her career.
