Abstract:

Objective

Introduce medical students to (and encourage appreciation for) the role of library services staff and resources in the hospital setting.

Methods

Year one medical students in a combined B.A./M.D. program spend two weeks exploring non-physician roles in a hospital, rotating through nineteen departments with four hours in each department, in order to appreciate the teamwork needed for successful patient care in a hospital setting.  The library staff participated, dividing the four hour shift into four modules; clinical reference, collection management, ILL/document delivery, and consumer health/health literacy.  Each module included a couple of hands-on exercises.  Ten students were asked to complete a questionnaire to determine whether they learned about library services.

Results

Students were impressed with the resources of our libraries and the services available to physicians from the library staff, but (predictably) preferred more clinical experiences.

Conclusions

Library staff positioned themselves as important members of the hospital team whose services matter to patient care.  Medical students may appreciate the team experience more once they begin their hospital rotations in medical school.
