Recovery from nitrous oxide administration.

John L. Bezzant,M.D.

Patients often ask, both before and after administration of nitrous oxide, if they can drive safely afterward. By the time we have waited for them to feel "normal", have given them instructions regarding care of the wound, and they have checked out with the secretary, virtually all feel alert and ready to drive. I tell the patient that if there is any question regarding the patient's alertness, then the patient should stay in the waiting room until fully alert.
