Varicella (chicken pox-KH

John L. Bezzant,M.D.

Individual lesion of varicella (chicken pox). The lesion is described as looking like a dew drop on a rose petal. The lesions evolve from red macules to red papules to vesicles on a red base to pustules, and this evolution progresses rather quickly over a period of several days. If you see a child or adult with multiple red macules and papules and you suspect varicella, allowing 24 hours or less for the lesions to further mature into vesicles should give you the diagnosis.
