Treating dermatitis with lubricants

John L. Bezzant,M.D.

Ointments, creams and lotions contain varying amounts of water and oils. Ointments are essentially pure petroleum. The creams contain about half water and half oil, and lotions have a great deal of water and very little oil. Generally, the higher the oil content the more lubricating the vehicle and the better it delivers the medication into the skin.
