Treating palms and soles

John L. Bezzant,M.D.

The palms and soles of adult skin have a relatively thick stratum corneum, it is very difficult to deliver medications through that thick stratum corneum. I recommend that high potency or ultra-potent topical steroids be used, preferably in an ointment base, twice daily to bring the dermatitis under control. Bactroban ointment should be used along with the topical steroid to reduce or eliminate the growth of staphylococcal aureus which further perpetuates and intensifies the dermatitis, and prevents healing.
