If one is considering a diagnosis of melanoma, one should not do a shave biopsy. A shave biopsy may not get to the base of the melanoma, and consequently, one may lose the depth measurement. The depth measurement is crucial information regarding subsequent therapy surgically or otherwise, and also prognosis.
