The beta hCG value is less than the normal values found in a 5 week pregnancy, therefore, all of the following hypotheses can be made except :

a. this could be an ectopic pregnancy
b. the conception may have occurred less than three weeks ago resulting in a lower beta hCG value
c. this could represent a threatened abortion
d. no further work-up is necessary
e. if the pregnancy is intrauterine she has approximately a less than a 5 % chance of loosing the pregnancy
