There are a number of practicalities related to writing a systematic review for the Cochrane and/or Campbell Collaborations. Processes to be addressed by Dr. Turner include:

  • The PROTOCOL stage: clarifying the question; identifying inclusion and exclusion criteria; identifying search protocol; specifying variables of interest; planning data extraction; and planning analyses.
  • The REVIEW stage: identifying, acquiring the relevant literature and extracting data; stamping out bias - assessment of methodological quality.
  • The AFTERMATH: systematic reviews are not just for Christmas, they are for life (translation: systematic reviews need regular updates).
  • The REQUIREMENTS: recruiting people who have the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to undertake this exciting research process.

Presenter
For the last five years William Turner has been working as a lecturer for the School for Policy Studies at Bristol University, UK with substantial teaching commitments at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His teaching draws on two different areas of expertise and interest: (a) quantitative research methodology with particular emphasis on research synthesis in particular Cochrane and Campbell systematic reviews, and (b) applicability of and evidence for effectiveness for a range of psychotherapeutic interventions.
His commitment to the utilization of best evidence in informing practice is demonstrated through his extensive engagement with the workings of the Cochrane and Campbell Collaborations; he is the editor of the Social Welfare Group of the Campbell Collaboration and serves as an associate editor of the Cochrane Developmental, Psychosocial, and Learning Problems Group. He serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Family Therapy.
