Abstract

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine'sElectronic Learning Environment presents an integrated learning spacefor the medical curriculum through the World Wide Web (WWW) and associated technologies over the Internet. The Electronic LearningEnvironment integrates course syllabi, lecture material, reference resources, computer assisted instruction programs, discussion groups, video, audio, images, and non-curricular resources. Emphasis is placed on communication and multimedia technologies to integrate and enhance these resources.

The key to creating a successful learning environment is providing an architecture that defines, but not limits, material creation and delivery. It was decided to take advantage of paper based materials currently produced by faculty and build upon that existing structure offering a different method of presentation and new capabilities. Understanding how to simultaneously develop resources and their accessibility is perhaps the most crucial step in this endeavor. At the School of Medicine, unfettered access to the learning environment is established by requiring all entering students purchase a pre-configured laptop computer. Each medical class enters the learning environment through their customized class homepage containing an interactive schedule and other class-specific information. Consistent presentation throughout provides a simple, familiar navigation.

Benefit in Attending Session:

Attendees will gain a thorough understanding of the process involved in creating a consistent learning environment on the web. The experiences we share exemplify the types of problems and their solutions many other learning institutions will face.
