ProMediWeb: Cooperative case-based learning in medicine using the WWW

Martin Adler & Martin Maleck

Abstract:

Learning via the WWW with synchronous cooperative tools is a promising approach for medical education. We have therefore developed an application to work on authentically designed medical cases. This software handles complex interactions and promotes synchronous cooperation via chat. The roles of the cooperating group members are managed by the controlling server-software. First evaluation studies show a high level of acceptance of this approach.

The CASUS drag&drop authoring-system was used to develop the cases from various medical domaines. We will demonstrate cases from internal medcine, trauma surgery, radiology and neurology. Hyperlinked text, images, movies and sounds are displayed and can be interactively explored. Seven different answer types with immediate feedback from the server are available. A concept-mapping tool for diagnostic hypotheses can cooperatively be used with drag&drop interactivity.

Benefit in Attending Session:

As the number of medical students and physicinas with online access increases steadily the cooperative use of educational software over the WWW seems to become a powerful tool in medicine. Our software demonstrates state-of-the-art use of Java-applets for sychronous client-server architecture with standard web browsers as the interface for multimedia data. The performance of this concept is limited by the available virtual machines and network bandwidth.
