Demonstration
Multimedia resources applied to a traditional-format course of Human Anatomy in a Medical School
Humberto Guiraldes, MD Professor and Chairman of Anatomy Department School of Medicine P. Universidad Católica de Chile
Abstract
The traditional learning method in Human Anatomy entails a steady schedule of practice with real material rather than with virtual elements. However, the use of appropriate software and the design and implementation of computer resources to guide the student and allow subsequent review of the dissections has proven to be a useful adjunct to traditional learning methods.
Medical students were asked to record their opinions about the software in structured forms. The prevailing opinion was that the software used was an important facilitator in their learning process, particularly when related to complex subjects. Their learning prior to the practical activities was substancially enhanced, as well. Subsequently, their review of material was a new opportunity, not possible before the software was implemented. A statistical review of the grades - and other indicators of academic performance - obtained by the students over the years showed improvement despite a steady increment in the number of students entering our First year of Medical School.
Benefit in Attending Session
The presentation will show the use of multimedia software to complement the practical activities (dissection ) of Anatomy students . In addition, it will sugest uses for an "on-line" practice of the discipline, which allows the students to use the network to complement their learning and, to reexamine the topics already learned.
