Abstract:

We are constructing a set of multi-linked websites where users can access information about, and images of, specimens from, major comparative brain collections of the world. Currently available, as will be demonstrated, are

several libraries of images of photographs of whole brains, and of hundreds of stained sections through many diverse brains, as well as a number of databases of lists of contents and of quantitative information from the specimen material. The databases allow searching and sorting functions on-line through standard web browsers. Images and data can be downloaded for use in constructing educational presentations, and for use in research projects. Screens from the sites themselves can be displayed in classrooms suitably equipped. Also included are examples of classroom use of these specimen materials. Brain collections now represented in some form on the sites include the Welker collection from the University of Wisconsin; the Johnson collection from Michigan State University; the Yakovlev-Haleem collection at the National Museum of Health and Medicine, the Meyer collection from the Johns Hopkins University, the ƒriens Kappers collection from the Netherlands Brain Institute, and the Huber-Crosby and Crosby-Lauer collections from the University of Michigan. Supported by NSF grants IBN 9812712, 9814911, 9814912.

Benefit in Attending Session:

We will present, and seek, ideas in the construction of "re-purposeable" multimedia resources. Our contributions will include how to integrate resources on several web pages, and how to provide access online to images as well as to searchable databases, for users with standard browsers.
